While your vision is apealing, I am always drawn to my sadder one. I see John and Nancy married early in the war, with john killed later. This leaves Nancy widowed and the mistress of Beckfoot with, hopefully, at least one child to take the story on one more generation.
As to the rest I tend to agree with the rest of the comments posted here eg Dick being clever, Roger in the RAF, Susan as a nurse etc.
