I would think there was a good chance Secret Water froze in the winter of 1962/3. That was the year the toothpaste froze in my bathroom when I was at Cambridge, and I seem to remember reports that the North Sea froze for a while for some distance offshore. That would make it probable that the sheltered Secret Water would have done.

If anyone wants snow, they can have some of ours. The bank at the bottom of my driveway, where the snowplough pushes it, is over my head (and I'm 6 ft 1). We did get our simple colonial amusement looking at online pictures of the latest UK snowfall: a picture of snow on London roofs "which fell yesterday and was still there in the morning!" The snow that fell on our roof in December is still there and will be until at least mid-April.

However, unlike Windermere, Superior never properly freezes all over -- too big and too deep. On rare occasions in exceptionally cold winters a film of ice will form for a day or two all over, but it never lasts long, most years never happens, and in any case wouldn't support a skater even if one wanted to try the 150 miles or so from side to side.

Better stop, or I'll be getting told off again.
