Lockhart's note explains a very great deal. "Cherchez la femme" is a good basis to work from. AR was most certainly very fond of Evgenia. The advantage of having her shown as his wife on his British passport, at a time when he was not yet divorced, must surely have over-ridden any other factors. It allowed them to leave Russia and live elsewhere, as indeed they did for some years.

Whatever his views of the Bolsheviks up to the point where he and Evgenia formed their attachment, thereafter his overriding concern must surely have been to find a means whereby they could live together safely - something that would not have been possible in Russia, where, as a foreigner, he would have been suspect to some degree.

So I conclude that from that moment on he was doing all in his power to assist Lockhart, and I further conclude that he persuaded Evgenia to do so as well.

It seems most unlikely that AR would have been interested in being a paid spy, but Evgenia gave him a creditable motive.

I should perhaps admit that I have been in a not very dissimilar position, and I dare say MI5 have a file on me, with notes on my unsoundness, despite a good few conversations with attaches at our Embassy in the nation concerned.

I think your case is made.
