What Laurence says is also supported by the late Paul Foot, in his lecture as printed in the 2004 Mixed Moss:
'[After 1930] for one reason or another . . he was successful in his married life and so on, he lost all interest in politics.'
Some have even said that AR went over to the other side when he included 'imperialistic' practices, eg exploring, mapping, in Secret Water, but I've never gone along with that. Surely it was just what children of a particular type like doing at the time.
