Of course, in SW not only did they befriend savage guides, by the end they'd all turned savage and indulged in a spot of human sacrificing!

AR's consistent political position was anti-imperialist. I can't think of another children's writer who could have got away with the morality of Missee Lee (I actually think it's a very moral story) where the need to protect a way of life from the British gunboats was more important than preventing the odd beheading.
