The Ford Prefect was a play on the word perfect - which was apparently Ford's view of their car. Perhaps the rest of the world saw it as another "Dagenham Dustbin".
However, I understand, this and other UK cars did keep the Ford Motor Company afloat, as this was the only country in the the world where they were making a profit at the time.
