In the 1930's a UK grocer would have bacon which was sliced by machine in one's presence and one could specify the thickness of the rashers.
I think most bacon was smoked in those days and could last without refridgeration for a while. Most houses in the UK did not have fridges until the 1960's in any case.
Some people cut off the rind before cooking but it may the the parrot was given a strip of rind after it had been cooked.
