It could be that this location was perhaps not as hot, being underground, and so was hopefully a cool enough place to store such perishables without spoiling.

cave temperatures, after a few metre, if no strong draught, are stable at around 13ºC ( 54ºF in old money ).

In many areas they are used for food storage including cheese maturation.

Produced some ill feeling and worry in the early days of our exploration - Tresviso people thought we were after their cheese.
