I think Ed's point was that this narrative structure is repeatedin SA, SD and SW. It's not immediately apparent why, although it's hard to see how SW would work without Ss first. The removal of Nancy in WH seems to follow a different pattern. In PP the action could have started without the Swallows.It does occur to me that Nancy is an idealised spirit of adventure, which as to be realised through the more solid Swallows with whom the reader identifies.
