Jon - how did you cut down the 8 quarter planks?

Cut it to length and ripped it down with a table (circular) saw, then smoothed it with a sander or a planer. That might be a less-expensive, although less flexible, tool for the job. Or see what you can do about getting a real saber saw. But if it's well-cured, you'd better see about getting your blades in bulk. I'd be surprised if a single blade will last even half way through an 8' oak plank.

As to how we had so much, my father built (well, it's still not completely finished after close on 60 years, but . . .) the house I grew up in and my parents still live in. I can't recall what he was planning to do with the oak, but we ended up using a good deal of it over time. For quite a while it was stored in what's now become the living room, directly over the garage. As an indication of the winds we get, one blustery day, the pressure from the wind into the open garage lifted the floor, oak stacks and all, enough for the lolly-column to fall out. And he's a mechanical engineer, so things were, shall we say, rather conservatively specced.
