Forgive me for asking but my memory has gone walkabout. Does AR actually mention marmite?
Funny how questions of 'nursery food' provoke the busiest threads. On an historical point, it looks like the canon was poised, as it were, on the tipping point between home production, as in the Amazon's punch, local commercial production, 'grog' and universal brands, coca cola. The marmite/pb debate shows that these brands do not spread universally but followi certain commercial and cultural networks. The S & As used some universal or 'imperial' brands, I wonder at what point local soft drinks became global brands and if this could be used to map globalisation.
PS Marmite goes very well on toast with duck eggs boiled for 4 and a hlaf minutes, while peanut butter is IMHO best with jam in a 'Jeffereson Airplane butty' consumed to alleviate theMunchies.
PPS There seems to be a robustly empirical approach emerging along the lines of 'don't knock it until you've tried it'. Anyone care to put their empricism to the test?
