My mother worked as a canteen manager in a Marmite factory after WW2. As rationing was still in place, the large industrial size tins of Marmite that she was able to get hold of were considered luxuries.
Apparently at one point in the processing of the yeast, there was a valve which delivered almost pure alcohol concentrated from the yeast residue. My mother said that thre was a short discussion amongst the operators whether to report this source of untaxed alcohol to the Customs and Excise until wiser counsel prevailed and they used it to liven up punches at parties.
