I thought Nancy was a bit of a bully and a spoilt brat in SW. A real power struggle between her and John!
It seems to me that the S, A and Ds characters go in the following order of importance:
1. Titty
2. Dorothea
3. Dick
4. Roger
5. John
6. Nancy
7. Susan
8. Peggy
We never seem to get into the heads of the last two - or at least the narrative is rarely put from their point of view. It may be something to do with my age when I first read the books, but I always feel like the centre of attention is on the four younger ones (T, R, and the Ds), with the older characters facilitating their adventures i.e. Susan is there to be the mother figure - without her they would never be able to go off camping alone, John is the best sailor, Nancy is the wild adventurer and has all the ideas, and Peggy.... well, I have never been sure WHAT Peggy was for other than being frightened in thunder storms!
