IIRC measurements like that refer to a quantity needed to make up a base measurement. So in shotguns it refers to the number of pellets in the unit, so 20 gauge would be a smaller sized pellet than 12 gauge. In wiring I think it's the number of such wires which can be bundled into a particular size of circle. Or am I completely off base on this one?
