Ah;

The problem of getting some one to do the work for you that they do not want to - or to put something else aside.

My thoughts are:

1. Money as noted in an earlier posting. Having tried this several times it usually does not work.
2. Appeal to their better nature by explaining what is the level of importance - works sometimes but I am sure an old boat builder is likely to have heard all the excuses and be immune to such things. Being a uni lecturer one becomes hard bitten about excuses.
3. Bribe, did not the cruiser need another plank in PM, CF could have told the builder finish this and I will give you the cruiser, take as long as you like. Now that is attractive and means the builder has a fill in job. I always liked fill in jobs and gave those clients really good service, better than the clients who were demanding.

If asked I would plump for number 3 or a variant on this approach. AR strikes me as a negiotatior from way back, - walking across the battlefield smoking a pipe is a form of negotiation - saying you can trust me. Secret Water is full of negotiation between the Swallows and the others, which resolves nicely. I learnt a lot from AR, still do in the board. Negotiation is always about trust, without trust you have war, as AR demonstrated again in SW, whereas the SA battles were war games an entirely different kettle of fish.

Is part of SW not an analogy of the misunderstandings that drive most wars and AR had seen war close up. Daisy is the perfect boss that jumps to conclusions, but at lesat she is willing to learn. Most I have seen in engineering are not willing to learn.
