One might actually say that proper training, such as boatbuilding or other carpentry experience is a prerequisite for assembling those things. It sharpens your spatial awareness and reinforces your understanding of how things have to work together. Having built shelves, wineracks, a boat and other such bits and pieces in my formative years (not necessarily in that order), I can say that kit furniture I've subsequently encountered hasn't fazed me in the least (including disassembly, moving and reassembly of a futon which someone else assembled originally and for which there were no directions extant).
