Interesting Problem about training:

When I was in high school in Australia there were two streams in the schools. The first stream was for the academic sorts. The academic sorts studied Geography, History and a language. In my case I studied German. The second stream was for the non-academic sorts and they studied technical drawing, metalwork and woodwork. My brother who is an academic sort studied technical drawing. He is really good at it.

I really missed something in life not doing at least one of the woodworking, metalwork or technical drawing classes. I am sure a lot of boys like me could have benefited from the training.

In engineering, we had to take a year of technical subjects, including metalwork and welding. I must say I have not kept up with it.

I learnt woodwork the hard way from watching people in the family, for trial and mainly error and from books. This boat has a large amount of trail and trial again. But it is great fun. The drawings and (at least I am an expert drawing reader - comes from 20+ years of civil engineering) contain a number of interesting features. These features are challenges to work out how to build, which is a large part of the fun.

The bow transom is not supposed to be fitted till third plank is installed, I misread the instructions and installed the bow transom directly on the keel plank. I made the keel plank thicker instead of fitting a rubbing strip and I changed the transom to a single plane instead of two lapped strips.

I would not want to try and build the boat without having had a few other woodworking projects under my belt and a good team here and on the board to talk to about the problems.

I am of the opinion that all people should be taught the basic skills needed to survive, at least lost in a NationalPark. I would list those skills as:

1. Start a fire from a flint and steel.
2. Kill and skin a rabbit or chicken
3. Build a shelter
4. Cook a meal
5. Build a raft and float across a river
6. Climb a mountain
7. Enjoy the view from the top
8. Splint a leg and stop a bleed
