Nobody taught me to sail at school. I got into a boat, AR in hsnd (or at least in mind) and taught myself. Hence some of my disgraceful habits like not wearing lifejackets and doing everything under sail wherever possible rather than using an engine, both shocking by today's politically correct standards.

While at school I did teach a couple of the teachers to sail, but it wasn't a school activity. It was just each time that they had bought boats and were standing on the shore looking helpless! There weren't (thank heavens) sailing schools in those days, at least not in Southampton. You had to find somebody to show you how or learn by trial and error.
