AR was in trouble in 1912 when his new publisher Charles Granville absconded. When he appealed to the Society of Authors he was snubbed by the secretary, and as he mentioned this in his autobiography forty years later it “perhaps has something to do with the fact that in the end it was the Royal Literary Fund which inherited most of his estate” (Hugh Brogan in his Life of AR, page 83)
