I dunno. I'm rather with Ed, now that he has pointed it out, in finding oit odd. "She took the bacon off the fire" I could accept as removing the pan from the stove top, but holding it "over the fire" seems quite specific. You wouldn't hold a frying pan over a stove.

Maybe the stovetop was full of other cooking items. Maybe Mrs D thought bacon tasted better cooked over an open fire -- we know there was an open fire, as in Ch 4 "Nancy and Peggy were holding first one foot and then the other towards the kitchen fire." Maybe the stove wasn't lit yet -- though in winter that is hard to believe. Maybe AR put that in just to confuse 21st century Floridians....

It's all good fun.
