Our friends who live in a farm in Ennerdale still use a range very similar to those in these pictures - a quite small open fire which seems to be eternally alightin the middle, with ovens each side. I have never doubted that Mrs Dixon's was like this.

Our friends do now have a modern cooker as well, but it is quite clear that kettles and saucepans used to be heated directly over the fire itsel.
