Ian's pictures are of the types of kitchens I remember "Back o' Skidda'" in the 50s. Our kitchen was unusual: instead of an open fire we had a pot-bellied stove that could be lit to boil a kettle or heat a saucepan when it was too hot to want to light the big AGA. The other rooms all had open fires, of course. As the youngest, the little stove was usually my job when I was home from school.
