While the Swallows sometimes pair off into two tents ie John/Roger & Susan/Titty, Dick & Dorothea often share sleeping quarters eg in Teasel (CC) and the Dog’s Home (PM). In the Sea Bear (GN) Roger is in the cabin boy’s bunk and John & Captain Flint share, but Dick sleeps in the main cabin with the five girls! What happens in Wild Cat?

The children do age in the books eg Roger becomes an able seaman not a ship’s boy. And in SW Bridget is the youngest and is told by Roger to “wash behind her ears” She innocently asks Roger if he was told that (Susan laughs!).

But readers don’t like their characters changing too much! Captain W E John’s Biggles and friends eg Ginger are World War One fighter aces, but later books are postwar eg as “sky police” (and perhaps even into World War Two?) without changing much.
