I wouldn't call it a 'total disregard' of gender aspects. Notice that Roger and John don't cook. I know, Nancy also doesn't cook, but there are no boys in the Amazons. When Dick and Dorothea are staying aboard the Fram, it's seen as Dorothea's responsibility to cook. (Susan says something like "I don't think she'll even try making porridge.")
