I expect most of us always have been, and are, content to think of the 12 books in a totally sexless way.(The movies - a different art form - might be fair game).
[I've speculated before that the 'Oxus' trilogy - written in 1936 or so by 2 v. intelligent and sensitive schoolgirls - at the start at least - are a little more realistic - the character Maurice, for example - in a charming way, and that J. Cape seems to have left these bits untouched.]
Whether AR's approach might appear unrealistic to current 10-14 year olds, - comparing Judy Blume books, say - I don't care. Most of our intelligent kids (er-grandkids) on first looking into an AR book should be quite competent to make allowances.
