A tip that a professional Thames boat builder friend gave to me some years ago. When you have drilled the correct size pilot hole inject the hole with teak oil before inserting the screw.
This makes the screw easier to drive and helps prevent the formation of rot in the screwhole. It also make the screw easier to extract should you need to do so.
Apparently in olden times, good boat builders would use a mixture of castor oil and creosote as their rot preventing lubricant.
