Larch for planking makes good sense. The web article "boats of Swallows and Amazons", which is linked in the "Dick's Notebook" page of Tarboard, suggests that Amazon was planked with pine.

Although American larch (tamarack) is used in boatbuilding here in North America, it's mostly for knees, stems, sawn frames and such. I think it's considered a bit brittle for planking.
