Jonathon:
Thanks for the opinions - all opinions are welcome. I spent the morning working and slowly adding to my last post and so I had not read your latest post before I sent mine.
I have been on the Woodenboat Forum quite a lot and get good information - but I still prefer you lot. Sorry but I prefer ornery and I get that - somedays too ornery and then I just ignore the place.
It is only the garboard and keel plank that will be epoxy and glued the rest will be nailed and dolfimited (I hope I spelt dolfimite correctly - if not I am sorry). Dead Viking traditional.
I agree now Oak is a difficult timber to work and it is certainly causing me some misery. But it is a good learning experience, and I could get the wood for $500 for the whole boat. If I get cedar from Ravenswood Lumber in Canada and had it shipped down it is closer to $1000. I have $500 I do not have a wife that will sit still for $1000. I am going to beef up the sail area and so the extra weight in the keel does not worry me that much.
I will get the Cedar for the Swallow and use oak for the frames. I will have an excellent working knowledge of oak by the time I start Swallow. I will get the wood from Ravenswood or similar place. I certainly will not find that type of cedar in Houston.
The boat can be launched nicely from a trailer I will let submerge. SOP in Oz for speed boats. As I only have fresh water that should not be a problem. She will not be in the water a lot and that is the next issue I will need to deal with - but I am sure I can.
Anyway got to go back to work.
