I stand corrected - in the first paragraph of SA chapter XI it clearly states "the Amazon was a fine little ship with varnished pine planking".

And AR wrote about Cocky "they have got hold of the most beautiful spruce for the planking"

But I wonder whether "pine" was just used as a generic word for softwood.
