In Swallowdale, at least, John was leaving from Horseshoe Cove, while all their gear was still on Wildcat Island. I suppose he could have gone via the Island and changed there, meanwhile emptying Swallow, if he'd had a spare set, but that might have interfered with the operation of moving camp.
On another note, Roger responded "Two ties?" - but I don't recall seeing any of the boys wearing ties in any pictures.
