I felt that John & Nancy were ill suited as she is simply too strong for him (in the personality term). She is constantly trying to beat him, out think him and generally take over as Commodore. She is a year or so older than John and it often shows. On the other hand, she actually co-operates with Squashy Hat and shows that she looks up to him. Nancy could never settle for less.
Peggy is a fabulous First Mate - adventurous enough to not be a doormat but at the same time makes her own place as second in command. I think she and John would be very suited as thats the sort of person he would consider eventually as a wife - just like his mother. Remember we're talking 1930's here and a boy who's been brought up to be just like his father, a commander. Can you seriously see him letting Nancy take over, and can you seriously see Nancy letting him boss her around?
I'd give it a week if they were fortunate(and Nancy was unconscious!)
