That is on a par with the Tasmanian practice of catching short-tailed Shearwaters, locally known as "Mutton-Birds", because of their taste. This is carried out on the islands of Bass Strait, where the birds come to breed. They dig burrows in which they create their nests, and the bird-catchers reach down into the burrow to grab a bird. The hiccup is that these islands are also home to a rather large [6-8ft], aggressive and highly poisonous variety of Tiger Snake. The snakes go looking down the burrows for birds and chicks, and sometimes sleep there while waiting for a bird to return from a night's fishing. I think that you can imagine the rest.
David.
