Basically a poppyseed pound cake, IIRC. As for frying it, consider french toast. But I suspect what they achieved was more a steamed buttered toast than actual fried bread. They couldn't toast it as it would have disintegrated had they tried to use a stick or fork to hold it over the coals (but they took a skillet along on a day jaunt?).
