John - Thanks for the clarification, as I really had no idea what a "midden" was supposed to mean, but I took a shot at it - and obviously did not quite come up with the correct translation, but hey, I tried. That is the fun of this dialect business, trying to pounce on these strange terms and then piece together their meanings from the rest of the sentence. It just goes to show when two peoples try to communicate, that even with the best of intentions, misunderstandings can happen, leading to unexpected consequences.

I am looking forward to that video conference, and to feeling like I am a part of that group. I do hope my contribution will be of benefit to those gathered there. I dare not use my normal North Carolina accent, as it is more related to Deep South which for some reason becomes obscure to the outsiders. My intentions are to use a different dialect, one that I use when doing radio broadcasts. It is intended to be more "vanilla" and less specifically related to a particular part of the country, and thus hopefully more understandable to most listeners. It is quite a challenge to try to sound like a national network newscaster, but that is the desired mode of speech, to cover a larger audience. The other side of this conversation could prove to be rather interesting, as I will be trying to understand the UK vernacular. I just hope those fellows will also attempt to sound like a national newscaster, thus keeping communications at a hopefully productive level. It will be fun, and a challenge for both parties.

But then, John, you know how it is to try to get along in the middle of Texas accents around you, both understanding them, and getting them to understand you. In time, it gets easier.
