The point about Pigeon Post is that of all AR's books it was probably the best-researched - it had to be, because Ransome was on strange territory here. He drew heavily on the knowledge of Oscar Gnosspelius, a mining surveyor, and the model for 'Squashy Hat'. AR wrote that, thanks to OG, 'I believe there are no mining errors in the book'. The text certainly sounds convincing, and exceptionally well thought through - it is not merely a 'rattling good yarn'. I can remember first being electrified by the report of Squashy painting white patches high on the fellside - it was a low-key incident in 'pirate yarn' terms, but that's what made it more mysterious and real.

Andy mentioned Christina Hardyment's AR & Capn Flint's Trunk recently - she is good on the sources for PP - see pp 80-89.
