Panning makes use of the difference in Specific Gravity of the different minerals in the pan. Chalcopyrite has an S.G. of 4.1-4.3, whereas quartz has an S.G. of 2.5. I would expect that this would be sufficient to achieve a reasonable separation of the minerals.
