I'm no expert but I believe that the "little ice age" in the 17th/18th century was caused by a very small temporary reduction in the energy output of the sun, known as the Maunder Minimum. I think its effects were much smaller than would be the effects of switching off the Atlantic Conveyor. The last time that happened was much longer ago, as Peter Ceresole says.
