I was brought up in Cumbria in the 60's and 70's, and remember (from a very early age) hearing from my parents about the dangers of foxgloves and the effects of digitalis. The advice was pretty much "look but don't touch." Possibly the SA&D's would have had the same sort of cautionary tales fired at them?

Also high on the "don't eat" list was broom - cytisus scoparius. Are there any AR references to this other common Cumbrian plant?
