No - surely that's the point about the Ransome era. It was no doubt recognised that certain plants might be dangerous, but only if you were lunatic enough to eat handfuls of them, in which case you deserved what you got. A robust attitude of which I heartily approve. And I also approve of the 'cautionary tale' about adders: 'They'll get out of your way if they see you, but if you happen to step on one, he'll bite . . .' In other words, all these things have a right to exist. It's up to us to watch out. AR got it right, as usual.
