For a long time I have wondered about The Wade and some comments that have appeared from time to time in Signals re Wade Walks.
1. How was the Wade made, was it a naturally shallow part that was influenced by humans adding gravel over the years so that it built up to a roadway of sorts or was it a form of reef?
2. Why is it necessary to get permission to walk across The Wade, is it privately owned and if so how can someone own it, as it is below Mean High Water?
3. If it was man made, who would have given permission for such an obstruction to be built across a navigable piece of water?
4. Why is there only one Wade or are there many between islands in that part of the world?
5. If it is man made, what type of maintenance would be needed to keep the bed firm enough for vehicles to cross, and presumably a stupid question depending on the tidal range at that spot, but if it had to be maintained why wasn't it converted over time to a causway accessable at all states of the tide?
