Well, Jock, my grand mother used to make pig trotters and vegetables in aspic when I was young..but about translations: I read Ransome s books in Czech( because I am Czech :-)).My father gave me Winter Holiday one day when I have been ill and had to stay in bed and then I simply had to read the rest. But when I was a little girl, not all of 12 S+A were translated. So my father translated for me The Picts and the Martyrs and then Missee Lee. Of course, at that time, no english book could be bought in Prague, but my brother used to go to England for some professional training so he smuggled the missing books in for us:-).Now we have all books in English, when I have time I try reading it.I have just finished Pigeon Post and now want to start Secret Water.I like it in English but have problem especially with the marine terminology and then, of course, it is another culture and habits, e.g. pork pies.Never heard of them before.:-)It is known as children s books, but I love it although I am not a child any more.And how have you discovered Ransome? A friend of mine works in England and was surprised that nobody knew Ransome.Is it true or just a coincidence?
