Ok: Thinking on pidgin brought to mind Slocum and his vogage through the South Pacific, which is my AR connection. I then remembered the stories I read of a young Aussie sent into Northern PNG during the early stages of WW2. His story is amazing - makes Harry Potter look like a cub scout. Part of the story is about a European who was turned into the Japanese by a PNG native. When the Australian police caught up with the PNG guy - they hung him from the nearest tree - a clear message to the natives.

This was a very brutal war with no mercy shown on any side. Shades of ML.
