Yes, on the Broads I would certainly try to help a boat beating up a narrow stretch of river. Similarly in some cases on the sea.

But not if they require you to do so because they think they are rich and important and that peasants should defer to them as a matter of course. It is like not giving way to people driving BMWs on the road.

My copy of Knight on Sailing was very cheap in a second hand bookshop. It might be worth searching for it on the Net.
