An informative article in the Guardian about AR's 'spying activities'. It previews a forthcoming book about AR by Roland Chambers and portrays Ransome as a man whose life defied all such cliches, whether he was prepared to admit it to himself or not.

Whose side was he on?

A second Guardian article reporting that Lord Curzon, the Foreign Secretary insisted that CP Scott (the paper's editor at the time Ransome was seeking to return to Russia) was given a warning about what would be and what would not be acceptable. It is dificult to conceive that the warning in some form or other was not passed on to Ransome.
