I agree entirely.

I can think of many other incidents in the books that teach sound ethical and political behaviour.

A few examples of how not to behave:

* Captain Flint not hearing John out when John comes to warn him in SA.
* The Hullabaloo's response when they are warned by Tom in CC.

A few positive examples:

* Titty mastering her divining fears for the greater good in PP.
* Nancy helping the GA out of a tight spot in PM.

And something very grown up:

* The Mastadon's dilemma in SW. Through no fault of his own the Mastadon finds himself with his loyalties split betweeen the Eels and his new friends.

If Secret Water is a children's version of The Rdidle of The Sands then the Mastadon could be a children's wersion of Childers. If I am right this goes some way to answering Jeremy Kriewaldt's question which originally started this thread.
