I don't see that the word 'Petrol' is really a clincher. I confess to using the word petrol myself as a sort of generic term when referring to petroil for outboard engines.

Anyway Billy might well have been looking for petrol, already knowing where the can of oil to mix with it was in the garage. He wouldn't have needed to go into specific details to ask Cook a simple question.

The crashing of the gears seems more convincing. What was the situation when the Trojan was stationary? Was it out of gear, or at some intermediate point in the gearbox?
