In looking at the place names in the LAKELANDCAM.CO.UK offerings, I notice sometimes a place named like: BROWNE HOWE or another name like: GREAT HOW. Note the slight difference in the spelling of HOWE or HOW. Of course we all know the name: HOLLY HOWE.

Just what is a "How"? Is it different from a "HOWE"? Is this a "word" that is peculiar to the Cambria area exclusively?

In a similar question, I wonder what is a "RIGG"? I see in his collection a name like LOUGHRIGG. Is there a special meaning to that "RIGG" part of the name?

And what is a GHYLL? I see the name HOLBECK GHYLL also in the LAKELANDCAM collection. I dare not try to pronounce this one.

I still claim to be speaking English... of a sort, anyhow...
