Surely I am not the only Tarboardista to be excited about the prospect of rebuilding Swallow? (See the article by Geraint Lewis in the latest Signals.)
I’d love to see and, better still, sail such a boat.
Geraint wrote of having to resolve “conflicting evidence in the various historical sources”. What do people think the authenticity issues will be? As far as I can remember the descriptions are pretty basic between e.g. “13 and 14 feet long and fairly broad”, “built for a shallow estuary” without a centre plate and ( working backwards) “as much like Scarab/ Cochy as possible”.
That seems to leave quite a lot of licence. Presumably one debate might be on the use of epoxy and other modern potions: glues, varnishes etc and another might be on sail- material. Personally, I’d go for practicality on these questions.
What do the boat-builders on board think?
And those with more sense?
