Peter) who hates boats

Now now, Andyb, you're being provocative. I do not 'hate boats' - I love them but I'm not obsessed with them, and I don't wish to pay for other peoples' boats. (BTW, on the topic of what we like or loathe in the AR books, another 'Andy' who is known to you and me once said on Tarboard that he hated the Swallows - all of them - 'goodie-goodies'. When asked why he nevertheless read AR, he replied that he enjoyed the adventures and the settings. Similarly, people who have no interest in sailing can nevertheless enjoy Ransome, but it is very difficult to convince sailors of this, as previous Tarboard exchanges have shown.)

To get back to the 'new Swallow' topic, some years ago, an elderly lady member of TARS responded to an appeal for funds to save 'Cochy' by sending in as much as she could afford, and enclosing a note saying 'here is a contribution for 'Cochy' but please do not find any more AR boats to restore!' My sentiments exactly.

Of course, the new 'Swallow' won't even be an ex-AR boat. And what is 'authentic' in this context? Surely if the new 'Swallow' is to be really authentic and true to AR, then sooner or later it is going to have to be run onto a submerged rock . . .
