In my (first American, ill. by Ransome) Secret Water, there is a curved line from the stern of Goblin which doesn't make sense except as a painter. This may have been "cleaned up" in later editions. The lack of a border on the picture suggests to me that it was cropped from AR's original drawing. (If anyone is interested, I have scanned in the picture and highlighted the painter, can e-mail it.) Secret Water is the only one of the books to have any full-page pictures which don't have borders on all 4 sides. It also has more illustrations in landscape format, many with one or more border lines missing, which suggest to me that they were cropped from the originals, possibly to remove large areas of sky or low coastline and enlarge the subjects.
